This Bible in a Year blog thread is a space where I will explore whether I have a firm belief in the existence of God based on reasoned arguments. Some of these posts will also cross over into Learning Diary entries under the Philosophy page.
As a cradle Catholic (baptised and confirmed, but poorly catechised and 30 years lapsed), I have come to realise that much of my life has been shaped, however inadvertently, by the moral codes I picked up on in Sunday School and through, my family of origin.
For many years, I have not really thought much about whether or not I believe in God. However, many hours of podcasts and YouTube videos from a range of people have made me realise there may be something more to the tradition that I loosely grew up with. These commentators include Bishop Robert Barron and the Word on Fire Institute, Michael Lofton from Reason and Theology, and the psychologically and mythically focussed Biblical Lectures by Jordan B. Peterson.
In 2023, I tried to listen to Fr. Mike Schmitz’s Bible in a Year Podcast, as I have never actually read all of the Bible. However, I was sidetracked very early in the process as I organised a public group event. I hope to get a little further with it in 2024. I may also try to lisen to The Catechism in a Year, but I fear it may be too much to respond to in the same way as I plan to for The Bible in a Year readings. Still, I may try for one post a week in a Learning Diary reflection for the Catechism.
Let’s see what I think of all of it and where it may lead me.
Regards,
Rebekah Martin
