The Story Behind the Name ‘Achene Logos’
By Rebekah Martin
I am Rebekah Martin, and as a part of an online learning group (Warrior Teachers- The Winning Mindset), I am garnering skills to engage with the current culture wars more effectively. Through this group, I was encouraged to write more often in order to clarify my thinking and better articulate it to others.
As I mused upon this potential, I thought that a blog may be the best way for me to loose change upon the world.
‘Loose Change’ sounded like a good name for a blog. Unfortunately, that domain name was already taken. So, one quick anagram-maker link later, I came up with the name Achene Logos (pronounced Uh-keen Low-goss). I think it sounds rather nifty even though it woefully unmarketable moniker for ‘The Glorious Algorithm’.
Achene is a botanical term for a dry, one-seeded fruit without the seams that would normally split to release a seed. Instead, the seed coat is attached to the thin, dry ovary wall (husk) by a short stalk, allowing the seed to be freed from the husk when germinating. Dandelions, sunflowers and the tiny seeds attached to the outside of strawberry tissue are examples of Achene.
I like the idea that this blog site will allow space for the seeds of my thoughts to grow and spread.
Logos in ancient Greek philosophy (Heraclitus 6th century BC) and early Christian theology (in the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ), refers to the divine reason implicit in the cosmos, ordering it and giving it form and meaning.
Reason, or the rational principle has many meanings, the most important of them being word, statement, story, thought, principle, reason and speech.
When appealing to logos when arguing an idea, is to use persuasion based on logic or reason.
Finally, in Jungian psychology, logos is the principle of reason and judgement, associated with the animus (the masculine part of the female).
So, there are quite a lot of concepts in there that can cover the work I will be doing through this blogging process.
Seeds of Reason Blogs will cover my responses to various facets of current cultural events, and my media consumption (Podcasts and Vlogs, Films, Literature and the Y-Arts).
Learning Diary blogs are my study reflections and analyses for different areas of interest as broad as philosophy, history and theology and The Warrior Teacher Program
The My Creative Writing section is a place for me to develop a more regular writing practice that will help me build a portfolio of original works. Eventually, I aim to become proficient enough to sell small anthologies as e-books.
